“The White Lotus”,

The White Lotus Season 3: The Subtle Power Play of Female Friendship and the Many Faces of Human Nature

Every Sunday night at 9 PM, I’m glued to my TV, absolutely ready to dive back into the world of The White Lotus. I’ve been hooked since season one. This show is not just a dark comedy, it’s more like a mirror that reflects all the messy, hidden parts of human nature: the desire, the vanity, the greed, the fear, the insecurity. A few episodes into season three, I was already annoyed that HBO doesn’t drop all the episodes at once like Netflix. I just wanna binge the whole thing!

This season, director Mike White is still doing what he does best - his take on relationships is so sharp and painfully accurate. Whether it’s family, romance, or friendship, he peels it all back, layer by layer. The result is both hilarious and disturbingly real. You laugh, but deep down you’re like… oof, that hit a little too close to real life, particularly the dynamic between the three middle-aged women friends.

On the surface, they’re super close, sharing everything, always together. But underneath? There’s this constant, subtle tension. One’s a wealthy housewife, another’s a C-list actress, and the third is a lawyer working hard to climb the social ladder. That class difference? It’s always there, quietly shaping how they interact.

Their friendship honestly feels so real. They want to support each other, but you can tell there’s always a bit of comparison going on - some silent competition. You hear lines like, “You seem so happy—I’m really happy for you,” and it sounds nice, but there’s this undertone. You can almost hear the envy, the anxiety, the tiny bit of bitterness.

We’re constantly told that female friendships should be all love and loyalty, no drama. But The White Lotus isn’t trying to sell us that fantasy. It digs into the truth: friendships, especially among women in today’s world, can be complicated. There’s pressure, competition, identity struggles. We want to be each other’s safe space, but sometimes we can’t help but measure where we are in life compared to our friends. And that mix of love, support, jealousy, and insecurity? It’s a lot. But it’s real.

Another interesting storyline this season is the one between Saxon—the rich, overconfident older brother—and his younger brother. At first, Saxon is your typical arrogant trust fund guy, but then there’s this one scene on a yacht where everything cracks. You suddenly see how lost he is underneath all that swagger. He goes from “I’ve got it all together” to a kid who clearly doesn’t know who he really is. No wonder Chelsea, the lovely girl with the bunny teeth, calls him “soulless.”

And speaking of Chelsea, she might actually be my favorite character this season. People assumed she was a gold digger at first, but by episode 7, she’s honestly one of the most genuine, least messed-up people on the show. I just hope the writers don’t ruin her in the final episodes…

Anyway, if you haven’t watched The White Lotus, you seriously need to get on it. The murder mystery stuff? That’s just the hook. The real juice is how brutally honest it is about people, how we think, how we act, how we relate to each other. You’ll definitely see parts of yourself in these characters… even the parts you might not wanna admit.

So I’ll leave you with this: what do you think about those three women and their friendship? Have you ever had a friendship that looked perfect on the outside, but underneath it all… things were kinda messy?
